We have heard it all – “I got to work and realized my key is no longer on my keyring. I can’t get into the building. The only other individual with a key is out of town. I wish I had gone keyless! What am I supposed to do? I have to open my business!”
“I got home from a night out with friends and my house key is missing! I don’t know if it was stolen or if it fell off my key ring somewhere. How can I get back into my home without breaking a window? Should I have the locks rekeyed?”
“My key is stuck in my lock. I can’t get it out! But I also can’t get inside. What should I do?”
These are just some of the scenarios that our locksmiths have heard. Every single one of these aforementioned situations was preventable, at least to some degree. No one ever has to get locked out, but of course, if your key is taken from you, there might not have been much you could do to prevent it. So how do you stop yourself from being locked out?
- Recite a mantra whenever you are going somewhere. You might simply tell yourself, “grab the keys” or something similar. If you carry a purse, remember to say this whenever you reach for your purse. If it’s your wallet you are reaching for, the same notion applies. Getting into this habit will help prevent you from getting locked out due to forgetting your keys. On this same note, keep a copy of your key in your purse or in your wallet.
- Provide a family member, nearby friend, or someone else you trust with a copy of your key. Yes, a copy of your key can be left under your front door mat, but this could be predictable to someone trying to break into your property. You might want to leave a copy of your key somewhere less obvious. You can even buy certain decorative pieces in which you can hide or conceal your key. But providing a copy to someone in the area who you trust can always be useful.
- Go keyless! Going keyless can allow you to get into your property simply using a code. All you have to do is remember this code. You can keep it hidden in your phone if you tend to be forgetful or have too many passcodes to remember. Keyless entry systems come in many options and they are available at various price points. You should do some research or ask a locksmith what they recommend.
- As previously mentioned, keep a key copy on you. Whether you want to keep it in your wallet or your purse, it’s not a bad idea to have an extra key on you.
- Have another way of getting in, in case you can’t find your key. Have you thought about having a wireless keypad installed outside of your garage? This way, you could keep a copy of your key inside of your property, but you can still access the inside of your property through an alternate entry.
- Get a key finder. There are different types of key finders, but we will go over one to give you a better idea of how they work. We will focus on the Stick N’ Find. This is basically something that you attach to your key ring, and you download an app to your smartphone that corresponds with said device. If you find that you are in a situation in which your keys are nowhere to be found, open up the app in your phone. You will be provided with a map detailing where your keys are located.
You can avoid a future lockout by being prepared. Double checking your door and making sure you have your key in your hand is an easy thing to forget to do, but it’s a wise idea to do it. This way, if you go to walk out, you will realize right away that something is off. Getting into certain habits takes time, but it is worth doing. We highly recommend duplicating your key so that you always have access to another copy, whether that is through a hiding place or through a person that you know you can count on.
Remember, if you find yourself locked out, and you really have no way of getting back inside, you can call a locksmith for help.
If you are in our service area, we have experts who are mobile, local and ready to help you. Keep the number of a locksmith near you saved so you can access them quickly in the event of an emergency. Locksmiths should be available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
